Buyxiety: Part 2 in a 3-Part Series of my Anxiety.
I get extremely anxious when I buy things. Unavoidable and expensive purchases such as car repairs, cat vaccinations, and tickets to ride a Greyhound bus across the country make me nauseous.
This means I’m good at saving money. I buy things used, never spend more than $15 on any article of clothing, and am driving the same ’98 Mazda I’ve had since before I got my license.
This also means I’m terrible at spending money without convulsing at the register and succumbing to fits of buyer’s remorse that leave me debilitated on my bedroom floor for half a day.
Recently I’ve been trying to decorate my new office at work.
“I bet you have a lot of stuff in your car to bring in,” my boss said on my first day.
Uhhh, not exactly. (You might recall that I’ve spent the past year getting peed on by babies in the slums of India, unknowingly working for a drug dealer, and begging to be allowed to conduct therapy sessions in storage closets. Beginning a collection of office decorations had not ever crossed my mind. Not once).
My co-worker with the Hollywood-themed office came into my office the next day and closed the door behind her. “I think it’s so great you’re here,” she said. “But I just think you should know that the counselor who had this office before you worked here for five years and killed himself two months ago. So this office has just been really empty and sad since then. So it’s going to be so much less depressing for everyone once you start to decorate it and really make it your own.”
Holy. Shit. Not good news for someone who believes that walls can have unresolved feelings.
That night I was browsing paintings on Etsy and wondering why everything cost a month’s-worth of rent until I realized that I could filter my search by price. Then I wondered why everything in my price range looked like something a five-year-old could draw with their non-dominant hand.
I walked out of my early doctor’s appointment the next morning right into a random art sale filled with really cool paintings. It felt like it was meant to be. But they were a bit pricey by my standards, seeing as the only painting I’d ever purchased before was at Hobby Lobby for $6.
A guy who worked there came up to where I stood, paralyzed with indecision. “If you get home and decide you don’t like it,” he said, “You can bring it back for a full refund.”
That was enough for me to finally decide to get two. “How long do I have to bring them back?” I asked as I was digitally signing my receipt.
“Twenty-four hours,” he said. I froze mid-signature. What if I didn’t wake up in time tomorrow? What if I went to get them out of my office late tonight and couldn’t get into my building? What if I damaged them taking them to or from my car? What if I had a terrible, debilitating accident in the next twenty-four hours and couldn’t return them and also couldn’t earn any money for the rest of my life?
“Have a great day!” he said, handing me my copy of the receipt that had printed out with only half my signature on it.
“I’ve made a horrible financial decision!” I shouted to Doug as I walked through the door. “We can’t eat for two months!”
He didn’t seem too concerned but I felt the need to justify anyway. “But I’ll have these paintings in my office for the rest of my professional life,” I said. “So it’s an investment, right?”
“Not really,” he said. “Do you know what ‘investment’ means?”
“Aaaaaaaaah,” I moaned, wrapping my arms around my chest, pulling my hair around my chin, and rocking back and fourth to self-soothe.
I spent the rest of the morning looking up what my paintings cost on other web sites and calculating what the additional costs of shipping and framing would be to convince myself that what I paid was actually a steal, considering mine came with high-quality frames and no glass so therefore no glare, and wasn’t no glare worth an extra dollar a year (if I divided the extra cost of mine by the number of years I will potentially work in an office)?
I hung them in my office that afternoon. But then I thought: What if they are too fancy for an office setting? And I’m just that snotty girl whose paintings are just a little too fancy?
I walked down the hall pretending I was on my way to the bathroom so I could peak into other peoples’ offices. Nobody else’s paintings had frames, they were just canvases- probably that they painted themselves! What if it was universally understood that frames are for living rooms, not offices, and I’m the only person who didn’t know this, and now I have created an awkward living room/office hybrid?
I went back to my desk and did a Google image search of “office paintings.” A-ha! One of the first pictures that came up was of an office with framed paintings at least as fancy as mine. But then I clicked on the picture and realized it was one of the offices in the White House. Dammit!
Then I closed out of the internet entirely because I started worrying that someone would walk by and see me Googling “office paintings,” and my computer is super slow at closing windows so by the time someone stepped inside my office it would be too late.
By the time I woke up the next morning, the 24-hour mark had passed. I breathed a sigh of relief that there was no decision left to be made. I went to work, looked up at my paintings, and smiled. I really like them.

OMG, you sound just like me. Three weeks ago, my husband and I bought a roughly 7×10′ carpet, which we desperately needed, at Sam’s Club. The following week, we saw the same carpet at the same place for 1/3 off. I had a caniption. I’ve been depressed about it ever since.

So, so funny! Love it. I love a good deal, too…. but I don’t want to have to spend money to decorate my own office. At my last “real” job (almost 12 years ago), they let each of choose our own artwork from a big catalog because we were moving to new offices. It was a very difficult decision for all involved… and we weren’t even spending our own money. ; )
Now try to get good vibes from your new artwork so you have a happier ending than your predecessor….

I bought a beautiful top the other week, made well, and covered with lovely, tiny sequins.
But it was $150.
I returned it the next day for a full refund even though I loved it.
I can’t justify buying, well, anything! I was gripped by buyers remorse for a month after signing up for a phone plan – even though my old phone no longer resembled a normal phone.
Nice to meet someone with the same bought goods induced paralysis.
The paintings are great, eventually those anxieties will fade!

Wow1 I don’t think my anxieties would let me even make it to the register with a $150 top. But I’ve found you can get some pretty cute things for super cheap and consignment stores- then when people compliment your outfit you can show off about how little you spent 😉

Super funny. “Holy. Shit. Not good news for someone who believes that walls can have unresolved feelings.” That sentence caused me to laugh loudly and as a result my room mates had to mentally decide whether something really funny was happening or if I was in need of medical attention.
Bake your walls a cake and do some trust exercises. That should help them like you better.

I do the same thing. I was raised with little, and I’ve never gotten over the fear of putting out large sums like I’m jumping off a cliff or something. It still feels unnatural to me to walk into a furniture store, for example, and not ask to see the damaged and seconds in the back but simply go up and buy the one I want in the color I want, as I did with my couch over a decade ago. I can still tell you what I paid for it, because I anguished over it for weeks.
It took me FOREVER to buy an ipod because when people tell me that it’s “only” $400 I look at them like they are flat out of their minds. (They are. $400 is a g/d sh*t-ton of money, people!)
And like you, I’m also good at saving money because I hyperventilate and get angina over spending anything where the price has more than one zero at the end. But I do wish I could get over it a bit sometimes …

I’m the same way. I just bought my first new pair of shoes in years and am freaking out because I’m never spent $35 on a pair of shoes before. Yes, they are functional. Yes, they serve multiple purposes (they go really well with my Halloween costume, too). But It’s still $35! I hate it when people tell me “It’s only $xyz” It’s not just $400, that’s my car payment. That’s all my utility bills plus groceries for the month! That’s half my mortgage payment, for Pete’s sake! It’s like these people never realized money doesn’t grow on trees. I didn’t own anything that wasn’t second hand until I got married… And that’s cuz I needed the wedding dress lol My husband is a spender, so we tend to balance each other out. Well, most of the time.
LikeLike
Shoes are a tough one for me, because I love them. Usually I buy them used so I can get a lot of them and not feel guilty about it. And sometimes they’re a good thing to invest in- for example, I finally decided it would be better to buy a couple pairs of quality boots this season instead of getting cheap ones every year that don’t last for long. So I’d say that $35 for a pair of shoes that will last you a while (and it sounds like you make sure they last you a while) is a pretty good deal- especially if they help out with that Halloween costume!
My boyfriend is a bigger spender than me, so I know what you mean about the balance thing. Sometimes it makes me anxious, but I figure that he can help me be more relaxed about it and I can also help him learn to prioritize.

Haha- asking to see the damaged ones- that’s a good idea! Might have to try it 🙂
I actually wrote a post about couch shopping not too long ago. I felt very adult to be shopping for a couch, which would have been my biggest purchase of all time (or, as I said to the employee helping me, “This will be the first piece of furniture I haven’t gotten from a Dumpster). Unfortunately some expensive car repairs came up so the thought of going through with a couch purchase was much too crippling. Maybe someday I will get to have your experience!
My only iPod is an iPod shuffle I bought for $70 six years ago, so I feel ya on that one!

Your story reminds me of my best friend, so I want to respond as if you are her. Firstly, I really like the artwork you picked. As I was reading, I was excited that you were looking for art and (being an artist myself) was about to offer you a low-cost painting just to know that your walls had something-but you took care of that. Secondly, I was saddened at how concerned with other people’s opinions you were. My best friend is riddled with paradoxes, constantly analyzing things to the point of well… ANXIETY. I too struggle with anxiety, so I know how debilitating it can be. My initial observations urge me to encourage you to trust your instincts and choices-and that I wish you comfort knowing that people will like you for YOU and not the frames that encase your artwork! Best Wishes, Linz

Oh yea, I do “rounds” when buying many things especially: furnishings, shoes, bags and jackets. Go to the store, look, go home, imagine when I’d use the item. Go back, buy, return, re-buy… these days it’s gotten exponetially worse (I recently ended up with 2 $250 bridesmaids dresses + alterations and I’m unemployed and broke bc I couldn’t decide which I wanted to wear… So…anyone looking for a full length gown, plum, size 8, contact me, I’m offering these designer gowns at deep discounts…i digress).
After being fired, dumped, de-friended, taken to a psych ward among other traumatic events, even the simplest decision gives me extreme anxiety. I just got a new apt and I bought…a mattress, after a YEAR of living in a new state. i JUST got a mattress… thats it. So thanks for letting me know im not alone!

Well parents car and they paid for gas… And it was officially ordained bridesmaids gowns – that – by the brides request be purchased from the same store so they came from the same fabric cut or some ridiculousness like that…. Believe me, I wouldn’t have gone to the trouble if it were up to me or even my own wedding.
All worked out so far, just gotta sell one or both of these gowns… Gotta recoup at lease 1/3 of the $610 I spent on this nonsense!
